Learning to prepare for and respond to severe weather is a reality for those living in the North Texas region. When severe weather happens, it is imperative that all citizens have an action plan in place. The best way to protect your family against potential weather disasters and emergency situations is to be prepared.

All citizens are encouraged to have a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio with battery back-up operation that receives weather information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Weather radios can provide immediate notification of severe weather. You should be familiar with and know the meanings of terms that are used during severe weather.

A watch is issued when weather conditions are favorable for the formation of severe weather. During a watch, keep alert to changing conditions and prepare to take protective actions. A warning is issued when severe weather has been reported by spotters or is indicated by radar. During a warning, take protective actions immediately.

Compile an emergency supply kit containing the following items at a minimum:

• Blankets
• Cash and credit cards
• Emergency food and water
• Essential medicines
• First aid kit
• Portable flashlights and extra batteries
• Portable weather radio and extra batteries
• Sturdy shoes and gloves

Discuss with your family:

• Where you will meet if separated
• Where your emergency supply kit is located
• Where your safe room (basement or interior room) is located

• Emergency types
• Forecasts
• Outdoor warning sirens
